Summary
Performs minor work required in the construction, operation and maintenance of the underground transmission and distribution plant.
Job Responsibilities
Duties:
-Anticipate the needs of underground technicians and division mechanics working in manholes or on poles, assist from the ground, and supply tools, equipment and material required.
-Install manhole hardware, fireproof cables, and clean and paint underground equipment.
-Assist in installing, rearranging or removing conduit, manholes, steel pole plant, equipment enclosures, street light poles and posts, fixtures, transformers, pads, cables and equipment, including aerial and submarine cables.
-Clean conduits, manholes, hand holes, and excavations. Clean vaults and transformer mats in locations where the work can be done safely.
-Operate and make minor field repairs and adjustment on furnaces and blowtorches, and heat compounds and solder to proper temperatures.
-Air test all types of underground equipment, at the direction of an underground technician or Division Mechanic.
-Operate pumps, fans, air driven tools, and other similar equipment.
-Set up warning signs, guards or barricades around openings or work areas.
-Load, unload and move equipment and material.
-Keep in good order all tools, material and equipment required by underground personnel.
-Operate car or light truck; keep vehicle neat and orderly.
-Perform clerical work related to this job.
-Learn approved methods of artificial respiration.
-Perform other similar or less skilled work of the occupational group.
-Mix and place concrete. Repair sidewalks.
-Dig and backfill excavations by hand.
Job Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must meet the Company's "General Requirements”; and, in addition:
-Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English; must be able to perform fundamental operations in arithmetic and to take measurement. (Ordinarily eight grades of grammar school education will provide the necessary requirements.)
-Must have successfully completed the underground portion of the pre-employment test except an employee hired prior to May 1, 1980 does not have to complete the pre-employment tests.
-Must be able to follow simple instructions and perform routine operations.
-Must have mechanical aptitude.
-Must have the ability to learn:
-The reading of construction prints and the making of simple field sketches.
- The operation and minor field repair and adjustment of furnaces, blowtorches, and the proper method of heating and melting compounds and metals used in the work of splicing cables.
- The identification and use of all materials, tools and equipment commonly used on underground work.
-Must be able to qualify for a basic driver's license with an articulated vehicle endorsement to operate motor vehicles in the State of New Jersey.
