­­Overview:  

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate –Polymer Chemist who will focus on the synthesis of novel polymers for porous carbon, and the investigation of formulation, coating methods, and carbonization/sintering process, as well as the design of novel vitrimers for adhesives and fiber reinforced composites. This position resides in the Soft Materials and Membranes Group in the Separations & Polymer Chemistry Section, Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
(ORNL).  

As part of our team, the candidate is also expected to be involved with both basic and applied research projects such as the synthesis of surface initiated homopolymers, block copolymers and dynamic polymers, recyclable high-performance polymer nanocomposites, the development of novel thermally conductive adhesives, thermally conductive interface materials/polymer nanocomposite and their manufacturing, and development of polymer electrolytes for Li-ion battery applications. Furthermore, the research will be complemented by collaborations and interactions with membrane and separation groups.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

-Design and synthesis of well-defined block co-polymers via various controlled/living polymerization techniques
-Microparticle surface coatings and surfaces modification with different polymers
-Characterize polymer mechanical and viscoelastic properties
-Design
thermally conductive interface materials/polymer nanocomposite
-Publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
-Present research results at national scientific meetings
-Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
-Take a position of leadership for day-to-day laboratory operations
-Participate in project planning and execution
-Work with staff to develop new proposals

Basic Qualifications:

-Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related field, obtained within the last 5 years
-Experience in polymer synthesis, polymer processing, and characterization methods
 

Preferred Qualifications:

-Knowledge and experience in controlled/living polymerization, particle surface coating with polymer, carbon precursors, preceramic polymers, mechanical and viscoelastic characterization of polymers, polymer processing and manufacturing, carbonization and sintering, and
thermally conductive polymer composite

-Excellent written and oral communication skills.
-Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
-Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

-This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

-For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. 
-Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
-To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year.  This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
 

For foreign national candidates:

-If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.  
-Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.  
 

Postdocs:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
